Kuta | barometerbali – The Pharmacy Study Program of FMIPA University of Udayana (Unud) hosted a community service event in Kampung Kepiting, Tuban, Kuta, Bali, on Friday, September 13th, 2024.

This initiative focused on educating participants about the rich biodiversity of coastal ecosystems and the potential for bioprospecting, particularly in developing cosmetic products. The event brought together international students from France, Spain, Hungary, and Taiwan, as well as local Indonesian students, fostering a diverse and collaborative learning environment.

The Coordinator of the Pharmacy Study Program at FMIPA Udayana Dr. apt. Eka Indra Setyawan, M.Sc., in the location said, the workshop began with presentations highlighting the ecological significance of coastal biodiversity. Experts discussed the various marine species and ecosystems that thrive in the region, emphasizing their roles in maintaining environmental balance.

“Participants learned about the sustainable use of these resources, particularly in the cosmetic industry, where natural ingredients can provide effective and eco-friendly alternatives,” Dr Eka said.

A key focus of the event was the exploration of mangrove leaves as active ingredients for cosmetic formulations. Local fishermen and community members were introduced to the potential benefits of these leaves, which can be transformed into lotions and other skincare products. This knowledge empowers the community to leverage their natural resources sustainably while creating new economic opportunities.

“Hands-on activities were conducted to engage participants in practical learning. Attendees had the chance to collect mangrove leaves and learn the process of extracting their beneficial properties for cosmetic applications. This interactive approach not only increased awareness of local biodiversity but also showcased the potential for innovative product development using indigenous materials,” he explained.

The collaboration between international and local students enriched the learning experience, fostering cultural exchange and teamwork. Participants shared their unique perspectives on sustainability and bioprospecting, promoting a deeper understanding of global challenges and local solutions. Feedback from attendees highlighted the importance of such initiatives in bridging gaps between communities and enhancing environmental awareness.
